ChatGPT Clawed Back to 56.4%. Gemini's Slide Hit Month 4

ChatGPT is clawing back the web. Fresh September data shows OpenAI's chatbot taking 56.4% of AI-chatbot web traffic, its fourth straight month of gains. Google's Gemini, which spent the last year eating ChatGPT's lunch, slipped to 25.0%, its fourth consecutive monthly decline.

The 12-month arc

A year ago, this was not a race. In October 2025, ChatGPT held 71.8% of AI-chatbot web traffic to Gemini's 13.6%. Gemini then went on one of the sharpest share runs the market has seen, past 20% by January, 26.7% by April, peaking above 27% around June. That climb is now in reverse: 26.6% in July, 25.6% in August, 25.0% in September. ChatGPT, meanwhile, bottomed at 53.7% in April and has added roughly three points since.

The quiet winner nobody headlines is Claude: Anthropic's chatbot grew from 1.9% to 9.3% of web traffic over the same period, a fivefold gain while everyone watched the two leaders.

Three rulers, three different races

Here is the honest caveat, and it matters: "market share" is not one number.

Similarweb, which produces the chart above, measures website visits, and it excludes apps entirely. That undercounts Gemini (deep in Android) and everything living inside Meta's apps.

StatCounter measures referral traffic, the clicks chatbots send to other websites. On that ruler, September 2026 looks completely different: ChatGPT 80.48%, Gemini 10.91%, Perplexity 5.85%, Copilot 1.79%, Claude 0.95%. ChatGPT sends four out of five AI referral clicks.

Sensor Tower measures apps. There, ChatGPT held 46.4% of the global AI assistant app market as of May 2026, with Gemini at 27.7%, and, as we charted on the retention side, Meta's Muse beats ChatGPT on 7-day retention, the downloads-are-not-habits story.

Pick your ruler, pick your champion. The only reading that survives all three: ChatGPT is no longer the default, but it is still the one that wins every measure, barely on the web, overwhelmingly on referrals, comfortably in apps.

ByteHerald's reading

The traffic war has a shape now: ChatGPT's decline stopped the month its moat got thinnest, and Gemini's surge stopped the month it started living inside everything, Search, Android, the URL bar. The next leg of this race will not be won on chatbot websites at all. It will be won inside operating systems, which is exactly why the labs are fighting the other war on per-token price, which we track monthly: whoever becomes the cheapest default infrastructure wins the traffic that never reaches a website.
