Claude is preparing a Personal Finance feature that links bank accounts through Plaid with read-only access, letting Claude analyze balances and transactions and build dashboards on top of them, according to unreleased app screens posted by TestingCatalog on October 18, 2026. Anthropic has not confirmed a launch date, pricing, or which banks will be supported, and the screens are leaks, not an announcement.
The leak trail: Money, then Personal Finance
The feature has now surfaced twice, and the progression matters. On September 14, TestingCatalog found a "Money" section inside the Claude iOS app, sitting next to Chats, Code, Artifacts, Dispatch, and Cowork, with the line "Link your bank accounts and ask Claude about spending, plans, and more" and a "Get started" button for linking an account. It did not roll out to users (ThisNewsroom's account of the leak). Within a week the story had traveled through the tech press, and The Independent ran it under a blunt headline.
Anthropic's response was sideways. That same Monday, September 14, the company announced Claude for Financial Advisors: official connectors for wealth advisers, including one into Charles Schwab's custody business through which Claude reads "balances, positions, transactions, cost basis, alerts, and money-movement status" (Schablitzki Consulting's reconstruction). The advisers' money got the official route; consumers' money stayed a leak.
Then October 18. TestingCatalog posted that the feature, renamed from "Claude Money" to "Personal Finance," is being prepared for an upcoming release: a "Link with Plaid" button, read-only access, analysis of the user's bank data, dashboards built on top of it, and a new onboarding screen. TestingCatalog's read: "a high chance" of an announcement relatively soon. The rename plus the finished onboarding screens is the classic shape of a feature approaching launch.
ChatGPT got there first, and the numbers are public
The comparison is the point, because the same plumbing company sits under both. Plaid's CTO wrote in May that ChatGPT's personal finance preview is powered by Plaid, and the Claude screens TestingCatalog posted show a "Link with Plaid" button (FourWeekMBA's structural read). Neither lab is building bank connectivity. Both are renting it from the same vendor.
| ChatGPT Finances | Claude Personal Finance | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Live (previewed May 2026) | Unreleased (leaked screens, Oct 18) |
| Bank connector | Plaid (per Plaid's CTO) | Plaid (per leaked "Link with Plaid" button) |
| Access | Read-only analysis | Read-only, per the screens |
| Scale signals | 12,000+ institutions; 200M people a month ask ChatGPT finance questions (Plaid CTO, reported) | Undisclosed; no bank list, no geography confirmed |
| Pricing | Launched for Pro, expanded to Plus (reported) | Undisclosed |
| Origin | OpenAI announcement | Leak; company silent |
Two hundred million monthly finance questions is the number that explains why both labs want this screen. That figure comes from Plaid's CTO describing ChatGPT usage, not from Anthropic, and it is a reported claim, not audited data. But even discounted, it says the demand is already inside the chatbots; the bank link just removes the step where the user retypes their numbers.
The read-only line is the whole product
The leaked screens are written to answer the first objection a bank customer has. The access is described as read-only, Plaid handles the sign-in, and unlinking stops Claude reading the account. That draws the boundary the whole category needs: an assistant that reads a person's money is a product; an agent that moves it is a liability event. OpenAI's version stops at analysis, not action, and Claude's screens promise the same.
Read-only is necessary but not sufficient, and the unanswered questions are the interesting ones. What gets stored, and where: your transactions reveal income, debts, pharmacy visits, donations, and recurring payments to specific people, which is a detailed picture of a life, not a spreadsheet (All About Cookies' privacy analysis). How Anthropic classifies the data for training: the company says raw connector content is currently excluded from model training, but it has not said how linked financial data will be classified. And the chain: the integration runs through a third-party aggregator, which is another link and another point of exposure. None of this is answered by a screenshot.
The same least-privilege logic applies here that we mapped when ChatGPT gained the ability to read Chrome tabs: per-site gates, explicit permission rungs, and "always asks" defaults are what separate a feature from a surveillance surface. The bank-data version of that ladder has not been published yet. It should be, before launch, not after.
Why this race is about the screen, not the money
The evergreen part of this story is the architecture. The bank-connection layer is the piece both labs are renting rather than building: Plaid (or MX, Yodlee, Akoya, Morningstar) holds the bank credentials and hands the app a read-only token. The lab never touches your bank password. That is genuinely good design, and it is also why the moat is not the plumbing. Every lab can rent the same layer. The moat is the screen where a customer makes sense of their money, and whoever owns that screen owns the daily habit.
That is the judgment call the leaks invite. OpenAI has distribution and a live product: it is already inside the 200-million-questions-a-month habit. Anthropic has trust positioning and a read-only promise, plus the enterprise wedge (advisers at Schwab first, consumers later) that suggests it wants the high-value money before the mass-market money. One lab is racing to ship; the other is racing to be the one you trust with the screen. The October 18 sighting says Anthropic now thinks it is close. The missing launch date says it is not sure yet.
