Forty-two major AI model releases in thirty-three months. From GPT-4o in May 2024 to GPT-6's interactive rollout this month, the frontier has shipped at a pace no previous technology cycle matches. This pillar post dates every major release we could verify, the table, the cadence, and what each jump actually meant.

What the timeline reveals
Reasoning went from zero to default. Before o1-preview in September 2024, no flagship model "thought" before answering. Within eighteen months, reasoning was the standard architecture at every lab, and the price of it collapsed, from o1's premium to DeepSeek R1's 1/30th-cost shock to today's per-token price war, which we track monthly.
Open weights stopped being the consolation prize. The 2024 story was Meta proving open models could reach the frontier (Llama 3.1 405B). The 2025–2026 story is open models setting the price of the frontier: DeepSeek V3 and R1 forced every lab to cut prices, and Kimi K2 and Qwen3 kept the pressure on. Closed labs still lead on absolute capability; open labs now set the economics.
The cadence never slowed. The busiest quarter was Q4 2024 (six releases), but the average held near four per quarter for almost three years, roughly one major release every three weeks. OpenAI alone shipped 14 of the 42, a third of the entire frontier.
The interface is the new model. The timeline ends not with a smarter model but with a different product: GPT-6's Intelligent UI turns ChatGPT from text-in-text-out into interactive software. After three years of racing on benchmarks, the labs are racing on what the answer looks like.
ByteHerald's reading
Timelines like this are usually marketing. This one is a warning about speed: any "state of AI" snapshot older than a quarter is already wrong, and any strategy built on a single model's lead is already expired. The winners of the next 33 months will not be the labs that ship the most models, OpenAI already wins that, but the ones whose models become infrastructure. That is why we benchmarked five AI coding assistants on the same ten tasks: the model is the ingredient, the product is the meal, and the timeline above is just the menu changing every three weeks.
