Meta's Muse has been out for barely a month, and its users are already sticking around like ChatGPT's. New Sensor Tower data, shared by venture capitalist Deedy Das, shows more than 30% of Muse users returning after seven days, higher than ChatGPT's week-one figure, with 14-day retention at 22%, just below ChatGPT. For an app launched September 8, that is a serious start.
The numbers behind the chart
- Retention: D7 above 30% (beats ChatGPT), D14 at 22% (just below ChatGPT). Still far from the elite tier, WhatsApp 67%, YouTube 59%, Instagram 54%, TikTok/Snapchat 37%.
- Launch scale: 2.8 million downloads in the first two weeks globally, vs 3.7M for ChatGPT, 400K for Grok and 300K for Claude in their equivalent windows. US downloads passed 5 million within 22 days, with roughly 700, 000 daily active users and over 1 million daily prompts by late September.
- Strain: Meta already had to adjust token limits because usage ran ahead of internal expectations, a good problem, but a problem.
The catch
Downloads are not habits. Analysts note Muse's app open rates still sit well below ChatGPT and Instagram, most people who installed it are not opening it daily. BNP Paribas keeps an Outperform rating on Meta but has trimmed its expectations for Muse's long-term monetization, and the core question is unchanged: can Meta convert launch hype into a daily ritual?
Meta's answer is distribution. Unlike every standalone AI app, Muse rides inside Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, and WhatsApp's 67% fourteen-day retention is the number to watch. If Muse becomes the assistant inside the app billions already open every day, it never needs to win the home-screen battle. That is also why OpenAI is already pushing ads inside ChatGPT's image generator: whoever wins retention gets to name the price of attention, and our October price tracker shows the per-token math every one of these apps lives or dies by.
What it means
Two things can be true: Muse's early retention is genuinely impressive for a one-month-old app, and it proves nothing yet. Agent products retain differently from normal apps, FundaAI estimates ChatGPT's own D14 sat near 10% for its first six months before climbing toward 25%. If Muse follows the same curve, today's 22% is a floor, not a ceiling. The retention leaderboard above is a snapshot of week five. Check back in six months.
